Overall, great acting but so slow an almost uninspired. One of the biggest disappointments I have seen in a long time. I sadly give this a C.
Boristhemoggy 20 January Firstly, this film is not about Gypsies or gangsters as has been said in some reviews, it's a story of a group of travelers, a very different set of people to gypsies and arguably not what popular opinion may define as gangsters.
It follows the Cutler family and some others who live in a semi-permanent camp and take to criminal deeds to make ends meet.
The head of the family is Colby played brilliantly by Brendan Gleeson, and his son Chad played just as brilliantly by Michael Fassbender takes a lead role.
The story is nothing new or exciting, the group struggle to survive and Chad along with his girlfriend Kelly and their 2 kids is keen to break free form the life they lead and do better.
The father and the rest of the group want group cohesion and value Chad as an important part of their group especially during criminal endeavours.
What sets it apart for me is that the acting is so superb from every single member of the cast that you really get to live the story and experience it.
I would not say as some do that I really felt sorry for Chad's family and routed for them, or that I despised them for being criminals.
I didn't make that decision in my mind although I was sad at the mindsets that were portrayed: it's such a shame that people can live this way with no regard for the rest of society.
That said I did enjoy the portrayal of the lives and lifestyles by competent actors that made me believe the story.
The only down side for me that prevented a 10 was the sometimes difficult filming, yet again this hand-held stuff that seems to be trendy to directors these days, but only serves to make us seasick and unable to focus on where the visuals are leading.
I pray that one day some director will realize this is an awful way to film. In a nutshell a decent story, fabulous acting and great direction means a thoroughly enjoyable evening watching this and an after taste that Michael Fassbender reminds me of the superlative that is Daniel Day Lewis.
Reviews that don't understand the language should just get subtitles. Do you complain about not being able to understand Greek spoken movies without subtitles?
Reviews that does not get this move are people who have a narrow mind just enough to fit their own way of life. It's a great movie, but not perfect.
I sturdily watched this abomination of a film up to mark and then fast forwarded it to the end because I just couldn't tolerate the pain any longer.
The problem with this movie is that there are no likable characters and you just don't care about any of them except for the police officers who are being ridiculed by the gang since they almost always manage to come off clear of any wrongdoings they perform with a huge amount of impudence and contempt.
A lot of time is spent showing the events that don't advance the plot or any of the main characters. What the hell Michael Fassbender was doing within a million miles of this tripe is beyond me.
It's what's wrong with society today, all wrapped up in one giant farce. The script drunkenly meanders through, what seems to be a glorification of sub-human and skewed morality.
The father of a dysfunctional, illiterate brood, who's own father is, what can only be described as, a brainless, uneducated, patriarchal moron. The traveling community already have a bad name, without this movie making it worse.
I just don't understand the point of this movie, or what it's message is. Fassbender is a worthless crook, his father even worse; an illiterate waste of space.
He swears at his kids and encourages them to do the same and has the parenting skills of a halfwit. He charges around the countryside stealing and joyriding, whilst pursued by an inept police force.
There is no more depth to this movie - it's not the sort of movie anyone should be making these days - society is bad enough. Anyone who can find a deeper meaning than that is delusional, or a massive delusional Michael Fassbender fan.
If the message is about 'family', well we can do without families like their's. They should be drowned at birth. I rarely get all bent out of shape about, what is essentially just a movie but the message this gives is the wrong one.
I still cannot believe Fassbender even considered this, in a career which has been on the up for some time now. There is nothing wrong with the acting, but how hard is it to portray a moron?
They were All morons - even the police. I'm not sure who will find this movie's 'message' appealing, but the lack of structure in the script just leaves you wondering what the hell the movie is actually about.
I kept thinking surely the movie would take some direction, other than the one we could have guessed from minute one, but no, sadly not.
I've had to task my brain more whilst stirring soup. Worth a watch if you have no expectations and your colouring book is full.
The two big names here are Fassbender and Gleeson, but huge film fans will maybe recognize other faces like Kinnear. I am quite a Gleeson fun, but while he was good too, not even I can deny that everything and everybody in this film is inferior to Fassbender.
With his performance here, he turned a mediocre story into something pretty good in my opinion. Luckily for him the character also offers really a lot, be it his violent, almost sadistic side, the character's struggle between hating and loving his dad or the connection he has with his wife and children, it is all very baity material.
I expected some tragedy towards the end and while it is certainly not an entirely happy ending, it almost looks like one, so I was wrong.
As for Gleeson, his character is interesting as well, he may seem like somebody easy to hate but we find out during the film that he may be a victim of his own upbringing and lets keep in mind that he apparently raised his kids on his own and managed to keep the family together somehow, even if his measures are undoubtedly something you don't want to get used to.
As a whole, this is neither a horrible nor a great film, but Fassbender makes it very much worth watching. This is a kind of film that won't get recognized by the big awards bodies I am sure, but that is quite a shame as MF gave one of the finest performances I have seen in a long time.
The more I see from him, the more of a fan I become. Go watch this movie here that luckily does not have a great title to get people interested, even if the reference to the quote from Gleeson's character's is a fitting one.
I give "Trespass Against Us" a thumbs-up. Pramitheus 20 January I seriously don't know what the hell I just watched. I do remember putting it up in my watch-list because of the trailer and obviously because it stars Michael Fassbender.
Still, as I write reviews, I am going to review it because it's not all poop. Now before I go on about this movie, let me make this clear.
If there was some deep meaning in it, I didn't get it and I am so sorry. I am saying that because look at the title of the movie.
It's so prosaic. I really don't think, because nothing made sense. At least to me, it didn't make any sense whatsoever. They are a family of vagabonds, OK.
They rob and come back, OK. They rob again and Fassbender gets caught, OK. There is just some random stuff going on. The only thing that made some sense is that Fassbender's character is kinda scared of his father, played by Gleeson and that's it.
